ESPN News Update: Dexter Lawrence Continues to Lead on and Off the Field

The New York Giants had multiple players who individually had productive seasons, even though the result wasn’t quite what the Giants had hoped for. Lawrence signed an extension last offseason and entered this season aiming to follow up last season, which was the best season of his career.

He didn’t have a career year like last season, but he undoubtedly remained one of the best players to take the field for the Giants. After registering a career-high in tackles, sacks, and quarterback hits last season, Lawrence finished this season with his second-highest sack total on a season as he nearly finished the season with the second most total tackles he’s ever had in a season.

He again had one of the best seasons of his career, being selected to both the Pro Bowl and the second-team All-Pro team for the second season. For 16 games, Lawrence was a formidable presence on a team riddled with injuries this season.

Although Lawrence personally and the defense had their fair share of successes together this season, the team as a whole did not. The Giants defensive lineman voiced his support for his fellow teammates who may not have had as productive a season as he did.

“It’s just the nature of the beast,” Lawrence said. “As a defense, you can’t buy into that stuff. I’m not going to buy into it. We’re just going to go out there and play football. You’ve got to control what you can control. It doesn’t matter. These are still my brothers.”

“It doesn’t matter if we can’t score touchdowns, doesn’t matter if we can’t get an interception, or cant get a sack. It’s still real people out here playing this sport. We’ve just got to keep holding onto each other, staying together, and building with each other.”

The fifth-year veteran quickly put accountability for the disappointing season’s on himself and his teammates and hopes they’ll obtain better results next season. Lawrence understands just how important every single play is in the National Football League.

“Definitely disappointing,” Lawrence said. “We missed a few plays that got us out of the playoffs. We’ve got to make those plays. As players, we’ve got to make those plays, and that’s the biggest thing.”
