Derby County transfer target Jacob Widell Zetterstrom may not be….

Timeline for arrival of Derby County goalkeeper target revealed

Derby County transfer target Jacob Widell Zetterstrom may not be available until after the Rams’ opening three games of the 2024/25 season.

Paul Warne’s side officially return to the Championship tonight after two years away as they take on Blackburn Rovers, live on Sky Sports at 8pm, at Ewood Park.

It’s been a solid transfer window so far for the Rams. They’ve recruited in weaker areas that were left by departing players, like up front and in midfield, but one area that they have struggled with all summer is between the sticks.

Their golden glove-winning goalkeeper from the previous campaign, Joe Wildsmith, was released by Derby after the end of the season and he has since gone on to join West Bromwich Albion.County do have two options in net with Josh Vickers and Rohan Luthra, but neither will be expected to be the starter for the side for the majority of the upcoming campaign, barring injuries.

They have been linked with the likes of Mathew Ryan, Marek Rodak, and Daniel Iversen, but their next number one is going to be Widell Zetterstrom.

The 26-year-old Swedish international is set to join Derby from Djurgardens in a deal worth £1.4 million, but the move has not been without its hold-ups.

Warne had admitted that a keeper target, who turned out to be the Swede, had been identified but that there was a complication to it which will become very evident once he signs,” as per BBC Derby journalist Dominic Dietrich.

Dietrich then revealed that the shot-stopper was set to play for Djurgardens in their Europa Conference League qualifying games on 25th July and 1st August and that he would not be heading to the East Midlands until after that date.

This meant that he was unlikely to play any pre-season fixtures with County and that he may only have a week to prepare for the opening game against Blackburn. It’s now the day of said fixture and Widell Zetterstom hasn’t arrived.

The Telegraph has now stated that he will join the club after he has played in his Swedish team’s Conference League third-round qualifier second leg against Ilves, which is on 15th August.
