MIAMI, FLORIDA – FEBRUARY 02: Chris Jones #95 of the Kansas City Chiefs reacts during the game against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium on February 02, 2020 in Miami, Florida.
Of course, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Andy Reid are spectacular, but they wouldn’t have gotten that far without Steve Spagnuolo and his troops.
Needless to say, Chris Jones was the anchor and the most important player behind that defense, which is why they simply cannot afford to watch him walk away in free agency.
Notably, Chiefs veteran pass rusher Charles Omenihu recently compared him to JJ Watt and Nick Bosa in terms of defensive dominance, adding that he hopes he stays with the Chiefs for good (via Peter Schrager).
“He’s right up there with JJ Watt and Nick Bosa as dominant forces I’ve played with…I hope he plays for the Chiefs the rest of his career,” Omenihu said.

Omenihu knows what he’s talking about, as he shared the field and the locker room with those two stars earlier in his career.
Both parties entered the offseason with high praise for the other and optimism, but Jones wound up sitting out the first game of the season.
They eventually reached an agreement on a short-term deal, but they don’t want to put themselves in the same position this time.
Jones and L’Jarius Sneed are the most important pieces of their defense, and there’s no one in free agency or available for trade that could fill the void of those players if they walked away.
GM Brett Veach will need to work his magic and make sure the numbers are right this time around, especially with a potential three-peat on the horizon.
