Francisco 49ersBrock Purdy didn’t start
too hot in the NFC title game against the
Lions. That was part of why the 49ers
scored just seven points in the first half.
However, Purdy was able to flip the
script in the second half, making a
handful of plays. He showed his best
quality in this side which is his mental
strength. Purdy never gets enough credit
for this because he faces pressure both
figuratively and literally.But he has
another quality that is hugely underrated
and was proven against the Lions. It’s a
trait that will come in handy and prove
crucial against the Chiefs in the Super
Bowl. This function is his “functional
mobility” as my good friend Moe Moton
of Bleacher Report would say. Purdy
demonstrated that mobility perfectly
against the Lions, carrying the ball five
times for 48 yards. His longest run was
21 yards, which Deebo Samuel said could
have been a touchdown. Without it, the 49ers will likely struggle more on offense. However, speed with the ball is not the only factor that gives him functional mobility. Purdy can walk in the pocket to buy time and can run away when passers are in front of him. More often than not, Purdy bails out of the pocket under pressure or if nothing opens after a few seconds. He does it consistently so well and that’s why he doesn’t take too many sacks. He only had 28 drops in the regular season, and anyone who watched the 49ers this year knows that would have been, and would have been, higher if he hadn’t used his mobility. So far, Purdy has been eliminated only three times in the playoffs. The striker gets credit for that, but also for running away from some and knowing how to handle pressure. The Chiefsand#039; defense is surely going to give Purdy and the 49ersand#039; offense fits. Not every play will be easy and Iand#039;m sure he will face plenty of instances where his mobility will be needed to keep the drive alive. That can be the difference in winning or losing the Super Bowl. It is something that Kyle Shanahan has always known and appreciates so much about Purdy.andquot; The first time he got in the preseason you could see him do it,andquot; said Shanahan. andquot; Then I always go back to his first NFL game against Miami. He made some plays along the way when they blew off him. Seedling#039; is so huge. You always want a guy who can sit there and get the ball to the right people every time and find a hole in the defense and make shots standing there and with accuracy. But this is not always the case. Sometimes it’s impossible to get to third place without someone winning.andquot;Heand#039;s a natural ability to leave a play. When to make a man miss you. When it will be taken off the schedule. No matter what happened, he will give you a chance. Everyone knows because everyone saw it, but his footwork last night in the second half was a problem for the defense and they had good coverage. He moved the chains and found a way to get the explosives to do it too.”It would have been more than enough for Shanahan to avoid sacks, especially given his years with Jimmy Garoppolo. He was sacked too easily. or even stepped into them. It was pathetic to watch. .The 49ersand#039;s offense has stalled too often because of this, and that happened in part in Super Bowl 54 against the Chiefs. That’s not the case for
Purdy, who excels at it. This time Chris
Jones and the Prime Sand#039; pass
rusher get after the quarterback, they
really have to win it.Jose Luis Sanchez III.
