Brighton & Hove Albion's Sam Jewell is appointed by Chelsea FC

The 34-year-old, who was hired from Brighton despite only being with the Seagulls for 16 months, was eager to take up a new challenge and he will now form part of the Blues’ recruitment team for their multi-club model.

Effectively, Jewell will form part of the club’s global scouting network and will look to spot up and coming talents to sign for both Chelsea and Strasbourg – the two clubs owned by ‘BlueCo’ and American owner, Todd Boehly.

The son of Paul – a man who made 269 appearances as a player for Bradford City and also managed the club for two years – will report his scouting findings to Winstanley and Stewart and the trio will evaluate their targets for the clubs

Since the announcement from Brighton, Jewell has resigned as the club’s head of recruitment, and is expected to serve out his notice period before starting his new role in November.

He played a major role in midfielder Moises Caicedo’s move from Brighton to Chelsea last summer, as the Seagulls earned a staggering £115m for the Ecuadorian, despite signing the player for roughly £5m just 18 months earlier.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi recently described Jewell as a big talent in an interview with the Athletic: “He’s a top guy, my friend. He worked very well in the last transfer market (window). He’s very young, but he has a big talent, big passion. He knows all the players in the world… just like me.”
