LUKE BERRY TO JOIN CHARLTON ATHLETIC AFTER LEAVING LUTON
CHARLES CROOK
The 31-year-old midfielder has signed a two year deal at The Valley, with Charlton saying they have the option to extend it by a third season.
The move to South London will see Berry reunited with Nathan Jones, who signed Berry for Luton in 2017 from Cambridge United.
Berry was allowed to leave Luton Town at the end of the 2023/24 season after the Hatters opted against taking up an option they had to keep him in Bedfordshire for next season.
The midfielder made 20 appearances for the Hatters, including 17 in the Premier League in Luton’s first appearance in the top flight of English football since the early 1990s.
He had joined Luton from Cambridge in 2017, when the Hatters were in League Two, and Berry would make over 180 appearances for the Hatters as he helped Luton all the way from the fourth tier of English football to the Premier League.
Berry told the official Charlton Athletic website that he was delighted to team up with his former boss once more.
He said, “Nathan told me how great the club is. When I finished up at Luton, I rang him straight away and wanted to get it going.
“This Charlton team is a really good team. We just need to believe in ourselves, put in the hard work and I can see us doing something special.”
Manager Nathan Jones added that he was happy Berry opted to reject other offers to make the move to join his side, who finished 16th in League One last season.
He said, “Luke’s someone that I signed for Luton in 2017. He’s one of the best goalscoring midfielders outside of the Premier League in recent years in terms of his outputs and we’re really delighted to have him.
“He’s a player I know very well as a character, athlete and footballer. It’s a significant signing for us with the track record that he’s got of promotions. He’s obviously had three promotions with Luton and that’s exactly what we’ve brought him in for. We’ve fought off a lot of competition to get him and I’m just pleased that our club and my relationship with him has enabled us to get the signing over the line. I’m sure he’s going to be a significant signing for the club.
“His last appearance was in the Premier League and his next appearance is going to be for Charlton Athletic, so that’s the type of calibre that we want to attract. We’ve fought off a lot of Championship interest for Luke.”
