Leeds United have officially released their retained list following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, confirming the departure of several players, including a notable title-winner, while contract negotiations continue with two key squad members.
The club announced that veteran defender Luke Ayling will be leaving Elland Road after eight memorable years. Ayling, who was part of the Championship-winning side under Marcelo Bielsa in the 2019/20 season, leaves as a fan favourite, known for his passionate performances and leadership both on and off the pitch. The 33-year-old made over 250 appearances for the club and played a pivotal role in their return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.
In a statement, Leeds United expressed their gratitude to Ayling for his dedication and contribution during his time with the club. “Luke has been an outstanding servant to Leeds United. His leadership, commitment, and professionalism will always be remembered, and we wish him all the best for the future,” the club wrote.
While Ayling’s departure is now confirmed, discussions remain ongoing with first-team regulars Sam Byram and Jamie Shackleton. Both players’ contracts are set to expire at the end of June, and Leeds are reportedly keen to retain them as part of their squad rebuild following a challenging season that saw them narrowly miss out on automatic promotion. The duo have been offered new terms, and negotiations are said to be progressing positively, though no final agreements have yet been announced.
Leeds United also confirmed that several academy and fringe players will be released as part of the summer clear-out, as the club prepares for another strong push for promotion in the 2025/26 Championship season. The retained list signals a period of transition at Elland Road, with manager Daniel Farke expected to be active in the summer transfer window to strengthen key areas and bring in fresh talent.
Supporters will now be watching closely to see whether Byram and Shackleton choose to extend their stays and how the squad evolves ahead of the new campaign.
