Bowen spell out key to West Ham success ahead of Giants Clash

The England winger pinpoints what makes David Moyes’ team so devastating on the counterattack ahead of trip to Anfield on Wednesday night

Jarrod Bowen says the key to West Ham’s counterattacking success stems from the freedom being offered by David Moyes. The manager admits he is having to take a more relaxed approach so his attackers can thrive.

And that reaped handsome rewards against Wolves on Sunday with Bowen following up on Mohammed Kudus’ brace while Lucas Paqueta provided all three assists.

Bowen and Kudus have been swapping positions during recent games and Paqueta is being allowed to roam – despite Moyes joking that the Brazilian leaves him “pulling my hair out.”

And England star Bowen said: “We’re playing with freedom, me, Mo and Lucas. We’ve got a really good understanding and there were times when Mo was up front and I was out on the wing.

“There were times when it was the other way around but I think that is the quality that the three of us have. We have that flexibility and it’s the same on the training pitch. We love playing together.”

West Ham visit Liverpool in an EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night, sit eighth in the Premier League table and have booked their place in the Europa League round of 16.

And while there is a growing expectation that Moyes will depart when his contract expires at the end of the season, Bowen says confidence and anticipation are high over what is to come.

“It’s an exciting time. As a player, you want to be in as many competitions as possible,” he added. “We’ve got a chance now on Wednesday night to get a place in the Carabao Cup semi-final, and then we play Manchester United on Saturday too.

“That will be another tasty game and there’s a lot to look forward to. We’re glad we got the win on Sunday. It moves us up the table and it makes things interesting over the Christmas period.”

Meanwhile, Kudus revealed that he was told by West Ham’s analysts to target the near post of Wolves goalkeeper Dan Bentley.

The Ghana star said: “Before the game I had the information from the technical team that when I come inside, I should shoot for the near corner because he’s more expecting the balls on the other corner. It was in the back of my head, so when [the chance came] it was a natural flow.”
