Birmingham City interested in signing ‘footballing goalkeeper’ Wayne Rooney raved about

The 32-year-old Brummie is expected to leave Hull following their managerial change and Blues could offer him a route back to his hometown. Blues are in the market for at least one goalkeeper with the future of last season’s number one John Ruddy also up in the air.

Ruddy is deliberating over a contract offer and has been speaking to other clubs. Blues are currently without a senior goalkeeper having released Neil Etheridge at the end of last season.

Allsop started 37 Championship games for Hull last season as the Tigers narrowly missed out on the play-offs. He kept 10 clean sheets in the league, including one against Blues in October when Hull recorded a 2-0 win at St Andrew’s.

Blues are looking to acquire a goalkeeper who is more comfortable with the ball at his feet and Allsop has been lauded for that skill in recent seasons. Wayne Rooney – who signed the goalkeeper for Derby County – raved about Allsop’s abilities shortly after becoming Blues manager.

Rooney said: “He is a footballing goalkeeper. I had him at Derby County and he’s doing the exact same at Hull. The way they can dictate where the backline is by their decision-making, whether you play short or long is the reason your full-backs or your wingers are high and wide. If you have got a keeper who can hit those balls, the back-line can drop off and you can start playing short or through the lines.”

Prior to joining Hull Allsop featured prominently in the Championship for Cardiff City and Derby County. Allsop has enjoyed spells at 15 different clubs throughout his professional career, from Iceland to Hull. He is, however, Birmingham-born and based and started his career as a trainee with West Bromwich Albion.
