Ben Godfrey In Talks Over Late Leeds United January Transfer

Everton defender Ben Godfrey is in talks over a potential January transfer to Leeds United on an initial loan deal, according to Jacque Talbot.

The journalist reported via FootballTransfers on Wednesday (24 January) that the Whites are exploring an initial loan switch, with an obligation to buy the defender on a permanent basis included at the end of the season.

AC Milan have also shown an interest in the 26-year-old this month, while Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is a known admirer as he continues to be linked with the Goodison Park exit door having only played twice in the league this season.

Godfrey only has 18 months remaining on his current contract on Merseyside, and the Toffees are keen to sell him this month to bolster their own funds.

Good versatility

Leeds United definitely need defensive reinforcements this January and in an ideal world Daniel Farke would be able to purchase both a new centre-back and right-back before the end of the month as the German is slightly short on bodies.

The departures of both Luke Ayling and Djed Spence, partnered with the injury woes of Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper have demonstrated the lack of depth in the Whites’ backline currently and Godfrey would be an ideal solution.

Godfrey has played under Farke before and knows how the German works, having played a major role under him at Norwich City both in the Championship and the Premier League during their time at Carrow Road.

He may not have played much this season, but his ability to play as a full-back on either side of the field, or as a centre-back means that he would likely solve all of Leeds’ current problems single-handedly if they can get a deal over the line.

In other Leeds United news, Farke may well have sent the 49ers a new January transfer ultimatum this month.
