Barnes is set to miss FA Cup third round to Sunderland

Harvey Barnes has been ruled out for at least another five weeks after a fresh assessment at Newcastle United’s training ground.

The £38million man had been making good progress throughout the autumn after coming off in the 8-0 away win at Sheffield United with a toe injury. But since then Barnes has suffered a setback and was “feeling pain” in his foot according to Eddie Howe last week.

Howe, speaking before the Carabao Cup trip to Chelsea, said: “That will be an ongoing process with Harvey. He’s hopeful to come back within four to five weeks. That is the latest on him.”

There had been hope for Barnes to be back before Christmas with Howe indicating last month that he would be back in December. But after opting against surgery on a toe problem, it looks like Barnes must remain patient.

Although, there is better news on another long-term absentee in Sven Botman who made a cameo appearance in the 3-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday night. The Dutchman has a chance of more minutes at Stamford Bridge but there is stiff competition in the heart of defence for this game with Emil Krafth and Paul Dummett already proving to be trustworthy players in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United and Manchester City earlier this term.

When asked about Botman, Howe said today: “There are certain players that lift the team that little bit extra and he is one of those players. He’s a big presence, a big guy and we missed his presence.”
