Arizona Cardinals running back compares himself to an iconic movie character in his approach to football
When the Arizona Cardinals added Trey Benson, it secured depth to an offensive backfield already chalked full of talent.
During rookie minicamp, Benson was asked about his approach to the running game. His answer proved he viewed himself likened to a storied movie character in Forrest Gump in his approach to keep running.
“Don’t get caught and don’t let anybody touch you,” Benson said, via the Arizona Cardinals’ official website. “Once I got to the second level, my teammates used to call me Forrest Gump. Don’t get caught, just run. Hit your head on the goalpost.”
In the 1994 movie, Forrest Gump plays college football. Forrest Gump is a simple character who finds himself in incredible situations. While playing football, he is told to run, which is exactly what he does. He has done it his entire life. In one scene, Forrest nearly runs out of the stadium on a kick return.
If Benson is anything like Forrest Gump, the Cardinals are in luck. Forget “Run Forrest, Run!” The new name of the game will be “Run Trey, Run!”
Benson will play a key role in a Cardinals offense that will use the running game with renewed vigor.
The third-round selection believes he can live up to his college production at the NFL level.
“I knew (getting drafted) was going to happen, I just didn’t know when,” Benson said. “I’ve come a long way these past couple of years.”
Only time will tell if Benson lives up to the Forrest Gump comparison.
