A supercomputer predicts Wrexham as the competition for promotion to League Two intensifies.

A supercomputer has taken a look at Wrexham’s League Two promotion picture to predict the final outcome for the season.

Wrexham face a nervous race to the finish in their hopes of landing promotion from League Two this season. The Reds have put themselves firmly in the driving seat for an automatic position, following a fantastic return to life in the football league.

Despite losing 1-0 against Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night, Phil Parkinson‘s men have established a two-point gap on fourth-place MK Dons, leaving South Yorkshire frustrated having passed up the chance to create a four-point lead with a game in hand.

With so few matches, there has naturally been some mapping out of the path ahead and how that impacts proceedings.

Parkinson’s side kick off with a trip to Colchester United tomorrow afternoon, while the likes of MK Dons, Barrow and Crewe Alexandra lurk in the distance. It means that Wrexham can ill afford to rest on their laurels despite boasting a cushion on the rest.

League Two supercomputer
From the outset, the battle for second and third position in League Two is difficult to call, with many looking at a supercomputer to predict the final outcome. According to Opta Analyst, their supercomputer runs 10,000 season simulations from the exact point of each week.

Following an eight-match unbeaten run, Stockport County saw their chances of winning promotion rise to a whopping 99.4%, boasting a six-point cushion on fourth with two games in hand.

Stockport look like they’ve got promotion wrapped up, making amends for their penalty shootout defeat to Carlisle United in last year’s play-off final.

Mansfield find themselves in a similar boat, trailing the table toppers by four points but given an 93.5% chance of securing League One football next season.

As for Wrexham, the supercomputer has placed an 82.1% chance of promotion from this point onwards, an increase of 7.8% from the previous week as results went their way despite dropping points.

MK Dons could have had Wrexham sweating if they beat Notts County, but instead had to settle for a 3-3 draw and a 16.3% chance of winning promotion.

League Two promotion
Wrexham must build consistency and not get complacent in their final five matches, with Parkinson knowing that securing victory in each of those fixtures will see them playing in League One next season.

The Reds travel to strugglers Colchester United tomorrow and many will look at the table expecting an easy win, but the hosts are fighting for their lives, creating a potential banana skin for the Welsh side.

Anything less than three points here will be seen as a disappointment with MK Dons, Barrow and Crewe breathing heavily down their necks.

With promotion firmly in their grasp, Wrexham can pile the pressure on further by winning this weekend, although failure to do so can see their rivals cash in.
