£52m duo to be removed from Man City Premier League squad

Manchester City are set to announce their Premier League squad for the remainder of the season this month now the January transfer window has slammed shut

Manchester City will be removing two players from their Premier League squad this month now the January transfer window has ended.

As we have come to expect under Pep Guardiola, January has been a rather quiet month in terms of new arrivals. City moved to bring in Claudio Echeverri from River Plate but he will remain at the Argentine club for the remainder of 2024 on loan.

Departures were always more likely this winter and two key ones were confirmed. Firstly, reserve goalkeeper Zack Steffen completed a permanent switch to MLS club Colorado Rapids after a frustrating period with the Blues.

Steffen had been loaned to Middlesbrough last season after failing to impress the year prior while Ederson was not in the squad. The second exit came toward the end of the window as Kalvin Phillips left City on loan.

The former Leeds United man failed to break into the first team often enough with Rodri comfortably Guardiola’s preferred starter in defensive midfield. The Blues have agreed to loan the England international to West Ham but a deal could not be brokered to make the move permanent in the summer.

Both of these decisions mean City will be two players lighter when they submit their squad to the Premier League this month. By MEN Sport’s calculations, 18 players will now be registered for the second half of the season, seven under the permitted 25-man limit.

Players such as Josko Gvardiol, Oscar Bobb and Rico Lewis are not included because they qualify as U21 players. With this in mind, here is how we expect the City squad to look after their list is submitted.
