A few days after the San Francisco 49ers were left empty-handed in Super Bowl LVIII, they have decided to part ways with a former member of the Arizona Cardinals.
According to multiple NFL insiders including Adam Schefter from ESPN , Steve Wilks has been fired by the 49ers after his one and only season as their defensive coordinator.
Blowing a lead late, San Francisco ended up losing 25-22 in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Amongst the Niners fallout from the result, Wilks was let go just three days later.
With Wilks, the 49ers’ defense were third in the NFL in points allowed (17.5) and ninth in defensive expected points added (41.48). He replaced DeMeco Ryans who became the Houston Texans’ head coach last year.
In his lone season as Cardinals head coach in 2018, Wilks led them to their worst record since 2000, 3-13. Eventually, he was fired by the Cardinals on Dec. 18, 2018.
Hired by the Carolina Panthers as their interim head coach in 2022, Wilks was 6-6 during his short stint before Frank Reich (now fired) took over.
Now out of a job, Wilks will look elsewhere for another opportunity in the NFL.
