As free agency continues, the Kansas City Chiefs are still without a replacement for LT Donovan Smith. Here are three underrated left tackles that can still sign this spring.
The Kansas City Chiefs still have some holes to fill this offseason, including when it comes to the offensive line. Donovan Smith — who started 12 games at left tackle — became a free agent this offseason, leaving the Chiefs without someone to protect Patrick Mahomes’ blindside.
Wanya Morris — drafted 92nd overall by the Chiefs in 2023 — is still on the roster, however, he only started four games last season.
Kansas City could also wait until April’s draft to find a potential Smith replacement, but there are still a handful of available names sitting in free agency if waiting isn’t an option. Could one of those free-agent tackles be the key to helping the franchise pull off a three-peat next February?
If the Chiefs want another LT with a ton of experience, look no further than Charles Leno. The 32-year-old blocker has started in 141 of his 149 career appearances and even made one Pro Bowl appearance since being drafted 246th overall by the Chicago Bears in 2014.
Even though it’s been six years since his last Pro Bowl appearance, Leno proved that he could still handle the NFL grind last season. Making 13 starts with the Washington Commanders, the ex-Boise State product played to a 77.8 pass-block grade on Pro Football Focus after surrendering 34 total pressures (26 hurries, 5 hits, 3 sacks) on 631 passing downs.
It was the fifth time over the last seven seasons that Leno recorded a pass-block grade of 77.8 or better, highlighting the impact he could have on Kansas City’s O-line.
Considering how Leno is also in his 30s and still looking for a Super Bowl ring, I can see him taking a cheaper deal to join the Chiefs in hopes of winning his first-ever title.
