Tributes pour in for Coventry bin lorry worker who died on duty

David Carpenter died carrying out his bin lorry duties in January 2023

Tributes have poured in for a much-loved Coventry bin lorry worker who was ‘crushed to death’. Readers say his death was a ‘tragic loss’.

David Carpenter, 60, was employed by Coventry City Council. He died in January 2023 while carrying out his bin-collecting duties on Guild Road in Foleshill when he became ‘trapped in the lifting equipment and crushed’. David died at the scene.

An inquest is set to be held on Monday, April 8 investigating the death of Mr Carpenter. It will be heard before a jury at Coventry Magistrates’ Court and is expected to last ten days.

The family are ‘still coming to terms’ with David’s death. Lawyer Karl-De-Loyde, of Thompsons Solicitors, will be representing the family at the hearing and will be supported by Unite the Union.

Karl hopes the inquest will provide them with ‘some insight into the circumstances’ surrounding his death and whether ‘any lessons can be learned’ to protect other workers in the future.

Readers took to the CoventryLive Facebook page to pay tribute to David Carpenter.
