Man found dead inside burning N.J. home after police rescue woman from flames, cops say
A man was found dead inside a burning Camden County home Thursday afternoon after police were able to rescue a woman from from the flames, authorities said.
Officers from the Waterford Township Police Department were called to a house on Cooper Folly Road in town at 1:13 p.m. and saw heavy smoke rising from it as they arrived, according to a release from the department.
They were able to enter the home, found a woman inside and quickly got her out, police said. They went back inside to get a man who was supposedly trapped but were unable to find him.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and found the man, identified Thursday evening as 89-year-old James Lucas, dead inside, the department said.
The woman police were able to safely get out of the home was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Two Waterford Township firefighters who sustained burns while putting out the fire were also taken to a local hospital.
As of 7 p.m., the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
