Death of Coventry candidate sees election postponed in area of city
It means Radford ward will not be voting for a councillor on Thursday
An election in an area of Coventry has been postponed after one of the candidates died. The contest to elect a councillor for Radford ward will no longer take place on Thursday 2 May, the council announced today (30 April.)
It is being rescheduled after the death of Dave Anderson, who was standing for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC.) The election for the Labour-held seat will now likely take place in June, the council added.
Elections to decide councillors in the other 17 wards of the city will still go ahead on Thursday. Voters in Radford will also be able to cast votes on Thursday in two regional elections deciding the West Midlands mayor and police and crime commissioner. Julie Newman, Returning Officer for elections to Coventry City Council, said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Dave Anderson following his sad death. “Although this means this Thursday’s Radford ward election for a place on the city council must be re-arranged, I would urge Radford residents to still turn out to vote as planned as the elections of Mayor for the West Midlands Combined Authority and the Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands remain unaffected. I’d also remind voters that they will need their Voter ID to vote.”
