Old Boy News: Larry Lloyd R.I.P. (6/10/1948- c.28/03/2014)

Sky Blue  profession for his time playing with clubs immediately either side of his Sky Blue days. Starting out with Division Three Bristol Rovers in 1967 it was with the mighty Liverpool from 1969 that Larry really came into prominence. In five seasons and 218 games (5 goals) with the Reds the centre-half characterised the indomitable spirit of the Merseysiders under Bill Shankly as they  won the League and UEFA Cup double in 1973 and he won the first of his five England Caps.

Larry Lloyd fell victim to Bob Paisley's grand Liverpool plan – then proved him wrong

Larry Lloyd in the Sky BlueThe Sky Blues paid a club record transfer fee of £240k for Larry’s qualities (which was to have been offset by selling both Mick McGuire and (now CCFPA member) Jimmy Holmes to Tottenham Hotspur for £200k but this deal foundered when Spurs gaffer Bill Nicholson left the club creating some long-term financial difficulty for CCFC! He made his Sky Blue debut for (now CCFPA member) Gordon Milne‘s men in a 1-1 draw at Derby County on 21st August 1974.

Larry’s time with the Sky Blues was injury hampered but nevertheless by the time he left Highfield Road snapped up for £60k by Brian Clough‘s Nottingham Forest in October 1976 he had clocked up six goals in his 54 Sky Blue appearances – not bad going for a central defender!

Larry helped Forest with promotion to the top flight in his first season and remained a key player over another four seasons and 214 games (12 goals) before seeing off his playing career as player-manager at Wigan Athletic from March 1981 to April 1983. Larry finished in the game back at Nottingham managing Notts.County until sacked in October 1984 and then went into property and running bars in Spain for many years. He returned to live in Nottinghamshire in 2021 though for many years had been a media pundit in local radio in the East Midlands. Larry passed away age 75 and CCFPA sends condolences to his family.
