The Baltimore Ravens Have a Huge WR Problem. What Should They Do About It?
The Baltimore Ravens have been one of the most exciting football teams to watch due to Lamar Jackson’s presence. The two-time MVP deserves his latest individual honor for the incredible performances he’s shown both in the air and on the ground.
However, football is not a one-man sport, and his heroics weren’t enough to get the team over the Kansas City Chiefs and make the Super Bowl. Now, the team is almost gutted in one of the most important playmaking positions.
The Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver room was notably neutered for much of their AFC Championship duel against the Kansas City Chiefs. Now that they’re back on the drawing board, they must assess how they can reinforce the team without ruining the things that made them great last season.
How will the Baltimore Ravens WR room with only Zay Flowers as the sure thing?
Zay Flowers is at the top of the Ravens’ priority list when it comes to wide receivers who can make an impact on the squad. He finished 2023 leading all receivers in receiving yards at 858 while notching 5 touchdowns. The next most productive target for Jackson was tight end Mark Andrews, who had 554 yards and 6 TDs to his name. The most disappointing receiver when it comes to the Ravens is Odell Beckham Jr. The one-time Super Bowl winner with the Los Angeles Rams only had 565 receiving yards and three receiving TDs on his account.
It’s a strange situation for the Baltimore Ravens despite having one of the best QBs in Jackson. It was obvious that they were saved by Jackson’s rushing abilities. However, if the team wants to win the Super Bowl, they need to help their QB make plays on the offensive side of the ball.
Sports Illustrated’s Adam Schultz added more insight on the issue:
Head coach John Harbaugh has already detailed how excited he is to see Rashod Bateman and Zay Flowers on the field together more in 2024, but with Bateman’s injury history, that is hardly a guarantee next season.
Duvernay and Treadwell caught five passes between them last season and if Beckham Jr. isn’t brought back, Jackson will still have Flowers, Bateman as well as tight ends in Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely as pass catchers.
But surely the Ravens will want to add another receiver or two to the room, whether that be a shrewd signing via free agency or the draft, Jackson needs weapons.
It’s going to be a tough ride for the Baltimore Ravens to try and make it back to the Super Bowl with the Chiefs dynasty in full force. However, there’s no way to get to the Super Bowl without taking them down.Hopefully, the revamped Baltimore Ravens WR room will become a more reliable weapon for Lamar Jackson to use next season.
