I never considered returning to Everton until Duncan Ferguson helped change everything

Former Everton player Wayne Rooney has given a candid interview on a number of topics including his reasons behind returning to Goodison Park

Wayne Rooney has revealed he returned for a second spell at Goodison Park because he wanted his sons to see him play for Everton and while he’s not ruling out going into a boxing ring, his focus is on returning to football management – even if he has to drop down to the lower divisions.

Rooney became the second-youngest player in Everton history when he made his debut against Tottenham Hotspur on August 17, 2002, and he became the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer when he netted against Arsenal on October 19 the same year, five days before his 17th birthday. The boyhood Blue from Croxteth was sold to Manchester United in 2004 though while still only 18 and spent the next 13 seasons at Old Trafford, winning 16 major trophies including the ‘full set’ of Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League, UEFA Europa League and FIFA Club World Cup.At the age of 31, and by this time the leading all-time goalscorer for both Manchester United and the England national team, he returned for a second spell at Everton in 2017. Although there had been plenty of animosity towards Rooney from many Blues supporters during the early years after his defection down the East Lancs Road, his family’s Evertonian roots prompted him to make the move back to become Goodison’s ‘Prodigal Son.’
