Leeds United transfer revelation emerges on Man City’s Kalvin Phillips

A permanent deal doesn’t seem to be on the cards for Leeds and their former player Phillips this summer.

The same outlet believes this remains the case even if the Whites are promoted at the end of this season, potentially leaving the club with a big decision to make if they are interested in the midfielder but are more interested in securing permanent additions.

Leeds invested in their midfield area back in the summer transfer window, previously having a shortage of options in this department but managing to recruit Ethan Ampadu, Glem Kamara and Ilia Gruev.

All three have managed to make an impact for the West Yorkshire side during the 2023/24 campaign, but another addition or two in midfield could potentially be required if they are promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

The struggles of the three promoted teams from last season just goes to reinforce the gulf in class between the Premier League and the Championship, so recruiting the right calibre of players will be crucial if the Whites want to stay at the top level for the long term.

One player who previously shone for them in the top tier was Phillips, who even played a key role in England’s run to the final in the last Euros whilst he was still at Elland Road.

Kalvin Phillips’ situation amid uncertain Man City future

In 2022, he moved on to Manchester City, although he hasn’t been much of an asset at the Etihad Stadium and has since moved to West Ham United on loan.

Struggling at both of these teams, it’s unclear whether Phillips’ career goes from here, but it doesn’t seem likely that he will remain at the London Stadium beyond the end of this term.

Leeds are interested in sealing a reunion with the player, but they would only be able to sign him on loan and pay a certain percentage of his wages, which could reduce the Whites’ chances of bringing the midfielder back to Elland Road.

Phillips’ contract at City doesn’t expire until 2028, so City can bide their time before making a key decision on his future.

Leeds United may benefit more from focusing on permanent signings

The Whites need to continue building for the long term – because that’s the best way they can maximise their chances of enjoying long-lasting success.

Some loanees may be required if their budget is limited and they need to hire some top-quality players to try and keep themselves at the top level if they are promoted.

But bringing back Phillips on loan may not be the best option, especially with the player struggling in recent years.

Signing him on loan rather than permanently could be ideal, in terms of being able to try him out before they potentially buy him permanently.

But focusing on the future rather than looking at the past may be a better option at this point.
