The controversial £25m fee Newcastle United must pay to ‘alleviate’ Everton’s FFP struggles
Newcastle United can pay £25million to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin before the FFP/PSR deadline on June 30.
Reports have linked the Magpies with a move for England international Calvert-Lewin. The 27-year-old, who scored just 15 goals across all competitions in the last three seasons, has one year remaining on his Everton contract.
Financial troubles have plagued Goodison Park in recent years, allowing Newcastle to sign Anthony Gordon for £40million last year. Farhad Moshiri’s reckless spending has caught up to the Toffees and they were almost relegated as a result.
Everton lost 12 points for two separate deductions last season after breaching FFP/PSR regulations. Four were reinstated upon appeal and the economic landscape on Merseyside has barely improved since.
The club’s takeover by 777 Partners is in doubt and acceptance remains about needing to sell players this summer. Calvert Lewin is one of their main assets and may need to move on now to avoid losing him for nothing next year.
A fresh FFP/PSR accounting year kicks off on July 1 – hinting at Everton being open for a deal beforehand. But at £25million, Newcastle might consider better value elsewhere rather than alleviate the Blues of their financial struggles.
