Premier League financial rule change now on cards after what happened to Everton

Another new Premier League rule change is on the cards after Everton and Nottingham Forest were handed points deductions this season, with a salary cap mooted, according to Sky Sports.

Mark McAdam explained that a shareholder meeting will be held on 29 April and will decide whether clubs are in favour of discussing changes to the existing profit and sustainability rules.

It is said that a salary cap or a cap on the amount of money clubs can spend on players, agents fees and amortised transfer fees could be introduced, while a cap of four times the lowest-place side’s broadcast earnings has been mooted.

Speaking live on Sky Sports [29 April], McAdam shared: “This is a really important period for all of the Premier League a lot of things are being discussed about how they could change rules and rules could come into place.

“Particularly with PSR, which has been hugely significant this season, as we’ve seen with Nottingham Forest and Everton who have been deducted points for financial breaches.

“There are talks today in a shareholders meeting about potentially changing the rules to bring in a salary cap. These rules could come into place in 2025/26. However, the vote today is just to see if they would be interested in introducing new rules.

“One of the things that is being discussed is a cap on what individual clubs can spend on players, agents fees, amortisation transfer fees, and stopping sides from spending billions on players. “A cap of four and a half times the broadcast revenue of the lowest-finishing Premier League side is being discussed. At the moment that would be roughly £456millon.”

Premier League salary cap mooted after Everton financial issues

This salary cap has been a talking point for Premier League clubs for a while, and with meetings now taking place ahead of the summer, the wheels could be set in motion to level the financial playing field in the top flight.

Points deductions handed to both Everton and Nottingham Forest this season sparked clubs into action as they began to realise what their excessive spending could result in – as shown during the quiet January transfer window.

It has been widely recognised that the rules need to be changed after the events at Goodison Park, with fans, pundits and clubs calling for different rules to be set in place. This meeting is the first step towards that happening. However, it could also be suggested that allowing clubs to spend four times the lowest team’s earnings would still hand a boost to those with the most money and revenue at the top of the division and maintain the status quo.
