Chicago Bears set to interview former NFL head coach for open OC position

If the Chicago Bears are really considering Caleb Williams as their next quarterback, this offensive coordinator interview makes perfect sense.

With the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select … Caleb Williams, quarterback, USC.

Well, okay, maybe that’s jumping the gun a bit, but— with the news that the Chicago Bears are set to interview Kliff Kingsbury— that’s probably what football fans around the nation would hear mutter from Roger Goodell’s mouth on Thursday, Apr 25, 2024.

The Bears have an impressive list of offensive coordinator candidates thus far, but Kingsbury might take the cake— especially if paired with Caleb Williams.

Besides Kliff Kingsbury, here’s who the Chicago Bears have on their interview list for the offensive coordinator vacancy:

Most recently: Philadelphia Eagles senior offensive assistant (2023)

Of the list above, there might be one or two coaches (Waldron and Kubiak) who I’d prefer over Kingsbury. The caveat will be that, if the Bears select Caleb Williams first overall, the coach who worked with him in college would probably make the best coach to continue building him in the NFL.

Kingsbury also has NFL experience, as he was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals with Kyler Murray.

Oh, and from 2014-2016, Kingsbury coached this quarterback at Texas Tech named Patrick Mahomes. Maybe that name rings a bell.

Boy, am I forgetful! Did I also mention that Kingsbury was the offensive coordinator for Johnny Manziel when he won the Heisman as a freshman? No? Well, he did!

When it comes to the quarterback position— a position the Chicago Bears have been swinging and missing on for decades— it could be a good idea to bring someone in who has had an array of quarterback success under him.

Sure, maybe his stint as a head coach didn’t go as well as he likely would have wanted, but that’s not the position he’s interviewing for. Coaches can be incredible coordinators and stink it up as a head coach. It’s possible, and it happened.

But, as an offensive mind, there’s no denying he’s up there with some of the most creative.

If the Chicago Bears go with Kliff Kingsbury as their next offensive coordinator, it might be a done deal that Caleb Williams is coming with him come April.
