Lars van den Berg Retires at 26 Due to Heart Issues: “My Worst Nightmare Has Become Reality”

Dutch cyclist Lars van den Berg has announced his retirement from professional cycling at just 26 years old due to persistent heart issues. The Groupama-FDJ rider shared the heartbreaking news on social media, calling it “my worst nightmare.”

Van den Berg, known for his talent as a climbing domestique, had been dealing with cardiac irregularities for some time. Despite undergoing medical evaluations and seeking possible solutions, doctors ultimately advised him to stop competing for the sake of his long-term health.

“This is the hardest decision of my life, but one I have no choice but to accept,” Van den Berg wrote in his statement. “Cycling has been my passion since I was a child, and to have it taken away like this is devastating.”

The Dutchman turned professional in 2021 with Groupama-FDJ after showing promise at the development level. Over the past few seasons, he competed in major races, including the Giro d’Italia, and proved himself as a reliable support rider in the mountains. Though he never secured a major victory, his work ethic and determination earned him respect within the peloton.

His early retirement echoes similar cases in recent years, as cardiac concerns have forced several young cyclists to step away from the sport. With the high demands of professional cycling, medical teams are increasingly vigilant about heart health.

Teammates and fellow riders expressed their sadness at Van den Berg’s departure but also their support for his decision. Groupama-FDJ paid tribute to his contributions, calling him a “true professional and a valued team member.”

Despite his career ending prematurely, Van den Berg remains grateful for his time in the sport. “I have lived my dream and raced at the highest level. Though this chapter closes, I will always love cycling,” he said.

As he now looks toward an uncertain future, Van den Berg’s priority remains his health. While he has not yet revealed his next steps, his resilience suggests that he will find new ways to stay involved in the sport he loves.
