In an unprecedented move, Belgian national cycling coach, Sven Vanthourenhout, has publicly urged reigning World Champion Remco Evenepoel to compete at the 2025 European Championships. The coach, who has been working closely with Evenepoel for the past few years, expressed his desperate plea during a press conference after the national team’s winter training camp.
“Remco is undoubtedly one of the best talents Belgium has ever produced,” Vanthourenhout said. “But his presence at the 2025 European Championships is essential, not only for his development but for the morale of the team. We need him in top form, leading the charge for Belgium.”
Evenepoel, who has had an illustrious career with victories at the Vuelta a España and World Championships, has been non-committal about his participation in next year’s European event. The 2025 European Championships will be held in Italy, offering a scenic and challenging route that fits Evenepoel’s strengths.
Vanthourenhout emphasized that the Championships will serve as a pivotal moment in Evenepoel’s career, given the tough competition expected from riders such as Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert. “We believe Remco’s ability to race in such a prestigious event will help him further cement his place as one of the sport’s greatest talents.”
Evenepoel has been focusing on a more selective calendar, concentrating on major Grand Tours and World Cup events. Yet, Vanthourenhout remains hopeful, asserting that the rider’s involvement in the Euros could be a key part of his preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Fans and analysts alike have voiced their anticipation over the potential showdown between Evenepoel and the Netherlands’ Van der Poel, with many predicting it will be one of the most exciting races in recent memory.
As the 2025 European Championships loom closer, all eyes will be on Evenepoel, as cycling enthusiasts hope for the nation’s star to make the final call to defend Belgium’s honor on home soil.
