The 65th Annual Swallows Day Parade in San Juan Capistrano, California, scheduled for March 22, 2025, is set to feature the world-renowned Budweiser Clydesdales for the first time. This iconic eight-horse hitch will be harnessed to the famous red beer wagon, marking a significant addition to the parade’s lineup.
The Swallows Day Parade is a cherished tradition celebrating the annual return of the swallows to the San Juan Capistrano Mission on St. Joseph’s Day, March 19. The event offers a full day of family fun, embracing the Old West spirit and the migratory birds’ return from their winter home in Argentina. Festivities commence promptly at 11 A.M., with attendees encouraged to arrive early due to street closures starting at 10 A.M.
The Budweiser Clydesdales have been a symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933. Horses selected for the hitch must meet specific criteria: they must be at least three years old, stand approximately 18 hands (six feet) at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, be bay in color, have four white legs, a blaze of white on the face, and a black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is also essential, as these “Gentle Giants” interact with millions of admirers annually.
Each Clydesdale consumes 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay, and 30 gallons of water daily. Traditionally, a Dalmatian accompanies the hitch; historically, these dogs were trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon during deliveries. The Clydesdales can also be viewed at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery and Grant’s Farm in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as at Warm Springs Ranch, a 300-plus acre breeding farm near Boonville, Missouri.
The inclusion of the Budweiser Clydesdales in the 2025 Swallows Day Parade is a testament to the event’s prominence and appeal. Their participation is expected to draw significant attention, offering attendees a unique opportunity to witness these majestic horses firsthand. The Fiesta Association, responsible for organizing the parade, expressed immense pride in hosting the Clydesdales, highlighting the significance of their appearance in this historic event.
This year’s parade theme, “Lassos and Lace,” reflects a blend of rugged Western heritage and refined elegance, promising a diverse and engaging experience for all attendees. The Swallows Day Parade continues to be a vibrant celebration of community, tradition, and the enduring spirit of San Juan Capistrano.
