Newcastle United are looking to add depth to their striker options in January and may have the perfect player in their sights.
It’s not often you get to pick up a World Cup-winning striker for around £11 million but if Newcastle acts fast, that could be a reality.
Reports in Italy claim that Newcastle are amongst a host of clubs keen to activate the release clause of Roma striker Paulo Dybala before it expires on 15th January.
Newcastle will face heavy competition for Dybala
Corriere della Sera has claimed that Newcastle, Chelsea, and Aston Villa have contacted the player’s agent with regard to making a move for the 30-year-old.
Dybala has plenty of experience of winning trophies having won the Serie A title five times with Juventus and of course, helping Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022.
A move would of course depend on whether the player dubbed ‘world-class’ by Roberto Carlos wants to leave Roma or stick around and add to his five league goals and six assists for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Newcastle could pick up Dybala for cheap and cash in on him later on
It feels like Dybala has been around forever but at just 30 years old he’s still got plenty left to give and Newcastle would be mad to not at least try and pick him up while this clause is active.
Even if we just sign him up on a short-term deal to get us through this spell of consistent injuries and then cash in on him later, that could work for FFP.
If we do sign him, I’d like us to keep hold of him as he’s a quality striker, it’s just whether he can cut it in the Premier League, that’s always the question. We’d still also need to sign another younger striker as two forwards in their 30s is more than enough.
