Newcastle United are now showing interest in a Serie A striker who is expecting to have a lot of potential suitors in the summer.
Joshua Zirkzee has impressed in the year and a half that he has spent in Italy with Bologna and there is now an expectation that a number of clubs are going to bid for him in the summer.
A new report from TuttoBolognaWeb names Newcastle as one of those clubs, but they will have to fight off the likes of Manchester United, AC Milan, Juventus and Napoli for his signature.
Newcastle ‘very interested’ in 6ft 4 striker
Newcastle are very much in the market for another goalscorer despite already having two top players who both hit double digits in the Premier League last season in Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.
In fact, Eddie Howe has identified a new forward as one of the three positions that he has made a priority either in January or the summer, with a new midfielder and left-back also wanted.
Wilson and Isak are both absolute quality when fully fit, but we all know by now that they struggle with injuries are have rarely both been fit at the same time this season.
It’s a difficult one to try and bring in a proven third-choice striker who knows they aren’t going to be guaranteed playing time when everyone is fit, but Zirkzee may just fit that profile right now.
Zirkzee could be the ideal candidate for Newcastle
Having left Bayern Munich in 2022 after spending five years there and winning the Champions League, Zirkzee had a point to prove as he moved on to Bologna to find more regular playing time.
It’s the kind of player who Howe loves to have in his team, someone who hasn’t yet reached the top of their game but is desperate to prove others wring by working hard, just like Joelinton or Miguel Almiron.
It looks like the Dutchman will be staying in Italy until the summer at least, but Newcastle have plenty of time to decide whether or not they want to make a serious bid for the attacker.
With seven goals in 15 Serie A games this season Zirkzee will be growing in confidence and looking to have a strong second half of the season before making a big decision on the future of his career.
