Newcastle are now pushing to sell ‘inconsistent’ 28-year-old player

Newcastle United need a new midfielder right now, but that is not going to result in Isaac Hayden getting another chance.

Eddie Howe’s options in the middle of the park are severely limited at the moment, and there is no sign of them getting better any time soon.

Monday was a bad day in that department, with news that the Magpies had cooled their interest in signing Kalvin Phillips. That was followed by reports that Joelinton’s season could be over due to injury.

That leaves Newcastle with just three fit centre-midfielders, one of which is one booking away from a two-game ban. That is Bruno Guimaraes, who is our most pivotal player.

It is clear that Howe needs another option in midfield right now, which has coincided with Isaac Hayden having his loan spell at Standard Liege terminated.

But the stars are not going to align for the 28-year-old to don the famous black and white stripes again. Instead, he is discussing an exit from St James’ Park.

Newcastle looking to move Isaac Hayden on despite midfield crisis

According to the Telegraph, Hayden is in talks with Championship side Preston North End about a January move to Deepdale

The midfielder was recently linked with a move to Preston, and it now appears that Ryan Lowe’s side are stepping up their interest. A move to the Lilywhites would see Hayden reunited with Freddie Woodman, who left Newcastle in 2022.

It looks like a Championship move is on the horizon for Hayden, who is also a target for Birmingham City according to the Northern Echo. They add that the club are pushing for any loan exit to include an agreement to sign him permanently in the summer.

He is not short of suitors, but a fresh chance at Newcastle is certainly not on the cards. While he plays in the position that we desperately need players in, his Toon career is over.

No way Hayden will get another chance at Newcastle

Suggestions that he could come in and do a job are fanciful at best, given the way his career has gone since Howe arrived at St James’ Park

He has suffered badly with injury, while he failed to set the world alight during a loan spell with Norwich City.

Hayden was most recently in Belgium, where his performances for Standard Liege were described as ‘inconsistent‘ by the club’s own CEO.

Hopefully he finds consistency at his next club, as Hayden was very popular during his time with Newcastle United. But for all his popularity, he is not what we need right now.
