Newcastle are confident of signing ‘outrageous’ player in January

The January transfer window is fast approaching and Newcastle United could well be busy.

Indeed, though FFP limitations continue to linger, Newcastle are expected to look at the signing of a new midfielder.

Even before big summer addition Sandro Tonali was banned from football, there were questions as to whether or not the Italian could operate with Bruno Guimaraes in midfield, with neither a traditional defensive option.

While Guimaraes has starred there at times, there was an acceptance even last season behind the scenes that the Brazilian was operating out of position.

The lack of a No.6 in Eddie Howe’s squad was noted by pundit Tim Sherwood during the defeat to Nottingham Forest too but it seems the wheels are now churning.

Kalvin Phillips: Newcastle now confident of loan transfer

Indeed, according to the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle are now confident of signing Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips on loan.

Though there is said to be rival interest from Juventus and Crystal Palace, the report claims that the Magpies will soon step-up their attempts to sign the England international, who is believed to want to leave in pursuit of first-team football ahead of Euro 2024.

Phillips is said to be a priority target and there is a hope at St James’ Park that a temporary move suiting all parties could be thrashed out quickly.

Kalvin Phillips to Newcastle: A potential win-win for all parties

If Newcastle land a player hailed as “outrageous” by teammate John Stones for his passing ability in a position they are short in, the start of the window would have to be deemed a success.

In an ideal world, Phillips would have played more football in the last few months but a buying team can surely rarely have it all in a mid-season window. Proven in the Premier League and praised by Pep Guardiola for his attitude even despite not playing, he would fit the bill for Newcastle on paper at least.

Phillips could then potentially step into a team operating at a high level and have little competition were Guimaraes to get his wish of playing further forward.

City would be shifting a player off their books too, which may help fund signings of their own.
