One Newcastle United player has now been ranked as the worst signing for another Premier League club in their modern era.
Loris Karius joined Newcastle on a free back in January and has only made the one appearance in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.
In a list created by The Athletic, Karius has been named as Liverpool’s worst ever signing under Jurgen Klopp after the goalkeeper’s capitulation in the 2018 Champions League final.
Howe does not have faith in Karius to compete for Newcastle
With Nick Pope currently out with a shoulder injury, Newcastle have had to turn to backup goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to fill in between the sticks.
Howe could have opted to select Karius ahead of Dubravka given that he already has more experience at a higher level, but there must be something that Howe does not trust about the 30-year-old.
Even after Dubravka’s poor run of performances in the last few weeks in which Newcastle have lost six of their last seven and conceded 14, Karius is still not being considered as an alternative option.
Instead, Howe looks to be exploring the January market for a new shot-stopper as he hopes to improve Newcastle’s form, so Karius must surely be wondering why he was even signed in the first place.
Karius will sadly be remembered for one thing only
No matter how hard he tries or how much he impresses throughout the rest of his career, Karius will forever be remembered for his howler in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.
It’s a huge shame because the ex-Liverpool man is clearly a talented keeper or he wouldn’t have been by Klopp in the first place, but any player of any stature is going to struggle to gain back their confidence after that performance.
He may not even get a chance to prove himself again in the league if Newcastle don’t give him the opportunity and it looks unlikely that he’ll be given a new contract when his current deal expires in the summer.
There have been rumours that he will look to go to Italy to be with his partner and child, but only Karius will know what his next move is.
