TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A growing controversy is brewing in Toms River as Mayor Daniel Rodrick claims that rock star Jon Bon Jovi’s charitable restaurant, JBJ Soul Kitchen, is attracting homeless individuals from across New Jersey — a statement drawing both criticism and support from the community.
The nonprofit restaurant, founded by Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea through the JBJ Soul Foundation, operates under a unique pay-it-forward model. With locations in Toms River, Red Bank, Newark, and Jersey City, the eatery serves nutritious meals to all — regardless of one’s ability to pay.
Mayor Rodrick alleges that JBJ Soul Kitchen in Toms River is contributing to an increase in homelessness in the township. He claims nonprofits are “busing in” people experiencing homelessness from other cities and towns, turning Toms River into what he calls “a haven for the homeless.”
“This isn’t about helping local residents anymore. It’s about bringing in people from across the state, which our township is not equipped to handle,” Rodrick said during a recent town meeting.
However, not everyone agrees. Several Toms River residents and local advocates have come to the restaurant’s defense, praising JBJ Soul Kitchen for its humanitarian efforts and commitment to dignity and inclusion.
In response to Rodrick’s remarks, Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea released a joint statement defending their mission:
“The JBJ Soul Foundation and JBJ Soul Kitchen are committed to ending homelessness through real solutions. We are not here to just move people around or force them into the shadows. Our foundation has built nearly a thousand units of affordable and supportive housing.”
Supporters argue that JBJ Soul Kitchen fills a critical need in the community, offering meals and a sense of hope to struggling individuals and families, many of whom are from Ocean County.
As the debate continues, the spotlight is now on Toms River’s broader approach to addressing homelessness — and whether Mayor Rodrick’s comments will prompt change or backlash in a town grappling with complex social issues.
