Mark McCabe, a 58-year-old landscape gardener who claimed to be a “creative consultant” for the legendary rock band U2, has escaped a jail sentence after admitting to assaulting a Dublin Airport employee. The incident occurred on November 9, 2023, when McCabe knocked the staff member unconscious with a single punch.
Appearing before Dublin District Court, McCabe, who once reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. His legal team argued that he had been under significant personal and professional stress at the time of the attack, which led to his outburst.
The court heard that McCabe became agitated during a disagreement with airport staff while waiting for his flight. When tensions escalated, he punched the airline worker, who sustained a concussion and required medical attention. CCTV footage of the incident was reviewed during the hearing, showing McCabe’s unprovoked assault.
McCabe’s defense solicitor stated that the gardener deeply regretted his actions, highlighting his contributions to landscape design and his alleged affiliation with U2. However, no official confirmation of McCabe’s role as a “creative consultant” for the band was provided during the trial.
Judge Dermot Simms described the assault as serious but acknowledged McCabe’s remorse and cooperation with authorities. The court was also informed of McCabe’s previously clean record and his offer to compensate the victim.
Ultimately, McCabe was handed a suspended six-month sentence, sparing him from immediate imprisonment. As part of his punishment, he must pay €3,000 in damages to the injured staff member and attend anger management sessions.
The case has drawn widespread attention, not only due to McCabe’s professional achievements but also his claims of association with U2. While some criticized the leniency of the sentence, others pointed to the importance of addressing the underlying stress and mental health issues that contributed to his actions.
