Progressive metal pioneers Dream Theater have announced their 16th studio album, Parasomnia, scheduled for release on February 7, 2025. This album marks the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy, reuniting the classic lineup for the first time since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings.
The band has already released two singles from the upcoming album. The first single, “Night Terror,” was unveiled on October 10, 2024, accompanied by a music video directed by Mike Leonard. This nearly 10-minute track showcases Dream Theater’s signature complex rhythms and technical prowess.
The second single, “A Broken Man,” was released on December 3, 2024, further building anticipation for the full album.
Parasomnia delves into themes of sleep disorders and the subconscious, featuring tracks like “Dead Asleep,” “Midnight Messiah,” and the epic 19-minute closer, “The Shadow Man Incident.” Guitarist John Petrucci describes the album as “classic Dream Theater,” picking up where they left off with Portnoy in 2009.
In conjunction with the album release, Dream Theater is embarking on a global 40th Anniversary Tour. The tour kicks off in Europe on October 20, 2024, with a special show in London, marking Portnoy’s first performance with the band in over 14 years. The North American leg begins on February 7, 2025, coinciding with the album release, and includes notable dates such as March 17 at Rochester’s Kodak Center and March 22 at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.
Fans can pre-order Parasomnia in various formats, including deluxe box sets and vinyl editions, through the band’s official website. Tickets for the 40th Anniversary Tour are also available, with options for VIP packages offering exclusive experiences.
This reunion and upcoming release signify a significant moment in Dream Theater’s storied career, blending nostalgia with new creative directions. As the band states, “This album represents not just our growth as musicians but also the journey we’ve embarked on together over the last four decades.
