Award-winning Mexican director Fernando Frías, best known for his critically acclaimed film I’m No Longer Here, is set to release a compelling new music documentary titled “Depeche Mode: M” this fall. The film blends raw concert footage from Depeche Mode’s three electrifying, sold-out performances in Mexico City during their 2023 Memento Mori World Tour with a deeper exploration of cultural themes surrounding mortality, memory, and transcendence.
The title “M” cleverly serves as a dual homage—to both Memento Mori, Depeche Mode’s 15th studio album, and Mexico, the culturally rich backdrop of the film. Frías captures the essence of the band’s powerful stage presence while also weaving in the unique relationship Mexico has with death, seen not as an end but as a celebration of life, continuity, and remembrance.
“Depeche Mode: M” is not just a concert film—it’s an atmospheric journey through emotional landscapes that echo the haunting and introspective tones of Memento Mori. From panoramic crowd shots that reveal the devotion of Mexican fans, to behind-the-scenes moments and reflective interviews, Frías presents a heartfelt homage to a country where death is not feared but embraced as part of existence.
In a statement, Frías noted, “There’s a rare synergy between the themes in Memento Mori and how we in Mexico understand and live with the idea of death. It felt natural to frame Depeche Mode’s music within our traditions and spiritual perspectives.”
With rich cinematography, intimate storytelling, and a score driven by Depeche Mode’s iconic sound, “Depeche Mode: M” promises to be a unique cultural document and emotional experience for fans worldwide. The film is slated for a fall 2025 release and is expected to feature both theatrical screenings and digital distribution.
