Breaking Down “Defying Gravity”: Behind the Scenes of ‘Wicked’ with Cynthia Erivo, Jon M. Chu, and the Crafts Team
As Universal’s long-awaited adaptation of Wicked takes flight, the team behind the film’s iconic “Defying Gravity” sequence is pulling back the curtain on the magic. Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the film promises to reimagine the beloved musical moment with groundbreaking visuals, live vocals, and innovative stunts.
Singing Live for Authenticity
For Cynthia Erivo, capturing the emotional depth of Elphaba’s transformation required singing live during filming. “There’s an urgency in the moment,” Erivo shared. “Elphaba is literally defying her limitations, and singing live allowed me to channel that raw energy.” To perfect her performance, Erivo worked closely with vocal coaches and the film’s music team to hit the iconic high F note that defines the number.
Jon M. Chu’s Vision
Chu, known for his work on Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, approached “Defying Gravity” as both a technical and emotional challenge. “This is not just about flying,” Chu explained. “It’s about empowerment, defiance, and transformation. Every element—lighting, movement, and music—had to serve Elphaba’s story.”
Crafting the Magic
The crafts team, including stunt coordinators and visual effects artists, combined practical effects with CGI to create the illusion of Elphaba soaring through the sky. Stunt coordinator Ryan Watson revealed that Erivo performed many of her own stunts, enhancing the sequence’s authenticity. “Cynthia wanted to feel the moment, not just act it,” Watson said. “Her dedication was incredible.”
The Iconic Note
One of the most anticipated moments of the sequence is Elphaba’s high note, which fans of the stage production know as a vocal triumph. Erivo’s rendition was achieved through a blend of live performance and meticulous sound engineering. Composer Stephen Schwartz praised Erivo’s interpretation, calling it “a breathtaking fusion of power and vulnerability.”
With the first part of Wicked set to release in November 2024, audiences are eagerly awaiting how “Defying Gravity” will soar from stage to screen. The collaboration between Erivo, Chu, and the crafts team ensures that this pivotal moment will remain unforgettable.
