Wes Edens breaks silence on Aston Villa ‘record’

Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Wes Edens hails Unai Emery and Monchi as the club gears up for the final weeks of a compelling campaign

Wes Edens says Aston Villa face a couple of ‘nail-biting weeks’ as the club look to qualify for Champions League football and claim Europa Conference League glory.

The 62-year-old, who co-owns Villa with Nassef Sawiris, helped save the club from financial ruin in 2018 following defeat in the Championship play-offs. But a huge setback was to become a blessing in disguise as NSWE swooped to take control of the club and restore its fortunes in just five years.

After backing head coach Unai Emery in his attempts to revive Villa, the club are on the cusp of something special this campaign. And Edens admits a top four finish would be “amazing” considering where Villa were when he first invested with Sawiris.

Edens said on CNBC: “Up the Villa, right? We had a big win against Bournemouth at home. We’re in fourth place, six points ahead of Tottenham.

“They have a couple of games in hand so this is far from decided but we’re getting closer to the end of the season and every game is like a finals match.

“We invested in the team six years ago. Aston Villa is a very, very historic and proud team, but it had some rough times. Six years ago from the Championship to the Champions League would be a record of some sort.

“We’re really rooting for it. We’re blessed to have some amazing management there. Unai Emery and Monchi are the people who really operate the team for us on the field. They’re amazing guys.

“It’s going to be nail-biting the next couple of weeks, but hopefully we’ll make it through that and we’ll be in the Champions League next year. It would be amazing.”
