NSWE handed Aston Villa January transfer request

Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are told to back Unai Emery in the January transfer window.

Former Premier League defender Stephen Kelly insists Aston Villa “have got to back” Unai Emery in the January transfer window in order to keep momentum going this season.

Villa have dropped five points in their last two games after drawing at home to bottom club Sheffield United and then giving up a two-goal lead at Old Trafford to lose 3-2 to Manchester United. Villa will look to end the year on a positive note against Burnley at Villa Park on Saturday. They remain third in the Premier League despite tasting defeat to Erik ten Hag’s side on Boxing Day.

At half-time, Vila were 14 points ahead of United in the table given their two-goal lead, but two Alejandro Garnacho goals levelled the game up by the 71st minute before Rasmus Hojlund then bagged his first Premier League goal to complete the comeback late on.

Villa have the opportunity to bolster Emery’s squad in January for the second half of the campaign, but spending big money in the winter is always a risky business. Villa must also be careful with their spending due to FFP guidelines, and sold off three academy graduates to raise money in order to bring new players in last summer.

“I would have thought because of how well they have done and because they are still competing in Europe, there’s an opportunity to bring players in and add to that squad,” Kelly told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

“Emery is an intelligent manager and will want to bring in players that fit his system and style really well, bringing competition for places.

That is always important if you are in Europe and pushing for Champions League football in the Premier League. The club have got to back him and allow him to bring in the right candidates to help strengthen.”
