Just In: Emi Martinez makes seven-word promise as Aston Villa squad react to Brentford setback

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has responded to the team’s frustrating draw with Brentford.

Unai Emery’s side held a 2-0 lead after Olle Watkins opened the scoring before Morgan Rogers grabbed his first goal for the club shortly after half-time. A win could have seen the Villans move five points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the battle for fourth place.

However, poor Villa defending ultimately led to three quick-fire Brentford goals, turning the game on its head. Ollie Watkins equalised in the 80th minute with his 18th league goal of the season but Villa were unable to find a winner in B6, with their lack of game management costing them two points in the race for Champions League football.

Taking to Instagram after the match, Emi Martinez made a promise to the Villa faithful: “We will keep fighting till the end. UTV.” A similar sentiment was shared by his Villa teammates, who will face the first leg of their Europa Conference League tie with Lille at Villa Park on Thursday.

Centre back Diego Carlos wrote on social media: “It wasn’t the expected result but we continued!” He was joined by Lucas Digne, who responded to the surprise setback: “Frustrating result but we don’t give up take the point and go again on Thursday.”

Pau Torres showcased a similar mindset to Martinez with Villa aiming for success in the final run-in: “Will keep fighting till the end, 6 finals left Villans.” Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers acknowledged the result but celebrated scoring his first Premier League goal.

The 21-year-old posted on Instagram: “First goal for this club”, accompanied with claret and blue heart emojis, “frustrating result but we will be better.” Villa teammates Leon Bailey, Diego Carlos and Youri Tielemans congratulated Rogers while Tim Iroegbunam replied: “That’s my brother.”
