Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins reveals ambitions outside of Premier League

Ollie Watkins was integral as Aston Villa held off a second-half charge by Luton Town in a 3-2 victory on Saturday.

The victory keeps Villa five points ahead of fifth-place Tottenham as the race for the Champions League continues.

Watkins set the tone with a pair of goals in the first half, giving his side a two-goal cushion that they’d need as Luton equalised in the second half before Lucas Digne secured the result with an 89th-minute winner.

And while Watkins wasn’t the man who scored the game-winner, his contributions led directly to the three points for Villa, as often has been the case this season.

The Villans are flying high in the Premier League this season thanks in part to Wakins’ 16 league goals, but the 28-year-old hopes that his prowess in front of the net is also helping solidify his case to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament.

“If I said I wasn’t thinking about the Euros I would be lying to you,” Watkins told BBC Match of the Day.

“I want to score as many goals as possible. I feel like I am doing that. I am confident and I am playing my best football.

“I have played Premier League football for a number of years now. I missed out on the last Euros squad because it was my first season in the Premier League.

“Now I have been in the Premier League for a number of years. I am scoring, I am established, so it is down to the manager if he wants to pick me.”
