3 players who could leave Aston Villa
According to The Telegraph’s John Percy, Aston Villa are considering letting Calum Chambers, Bertrand Traoré, and Tim Iroebunam leave in the winter transfer window either on a loan deal or a permanent move.
Traoré and Chambers are notable names who have joined the club with past histories at Chelsea and Arsenal in recent years, respectively. The former was signed for nearly 20 million euros from Lyon and is in his theoretical prime at 28.
Chambers has yet to log a Premier League minute this season, while Traoré and Iroebunam have played a maximum of 10 minutes in the league with just one or two substitute cameos between them.
As Aston Villa look to gear up for a top-four battle with significant winter reinforcements, they will need to clear out space in the squad by getting rid of players like these three who no longer have roles with the first team.
Arsenal’s positions of need
Per The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, Arsenal want to sign a new striker, defender, and two midfielders before the 2024/25 season starts.
The Gunners know they need to keep building up their squad to remain on top in the Premier League, and they need a strong finish to the 2023/24 season after recalling how they faded next to Manchester City in the 2022/23 title race.
This year, the margin for error may be even slimmer with Liverpool consistently getting results after a very active summer transfer window that included a total midfield overhaul.
Arsenal have what it takes to win the Premier League, but they do need some tweaks. The obvious issue is the lack of a proven goal-scorer, but more creativity in midfield to support Martin Ødegaard would help.
Furthermore, Declan Rice was a major addition to the middle of the park, but the ball-winning and general sense of active progression is still lacking compared to where a champion should be.
Meanwhile, Mokbel says that there are those within the club who believe a positionally versatile defender should be the priority in the winter transfer window.
That makes sense, in a way, but there are many Arsenal fans who will roll their eyes at another defender joining when striker remains a gaping hole in the title race.
Tottenham going for CB soon
According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, Tottenham want to get a deal done for a center back as soon as possible, completing a transfer within the first days of the January transfer window opening.
The window has officially opened today, so it could only be a matter of time before Tottenham land a new center back, amidst Micky van de Ven’s and Cristian Romer’s injuries.
Both starting center backs are among the best in the league, so Tottenham fans are dreaming of a player of the caliber of Jean-Clair Todibo to join them.
It may be more realistic for a modest upgrade in the winter, but any quality footballer will help Spurs at this juncture. They know in order to make sure they fulfill their potential as a Champions League squad, they need to be proactive at CB.
