The New York Giants have made their choice for their new defensive coordinator. They’ve been detailed in their search after moving on from long-time NFL DC Wink Martindale.
New York refused to rush to a conclusion. Now, they have their guy to lead their defense.
The Giants have hired former Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen.
The Giants expect that he will bring some staff members along with him from his time with the Titans. Expect those announcements in the coming days.
Bowen, 37, has been in the NFL since 2016. He’s been the Titans DC since 2021. In that time, he got a mixed bag of results from his defenses. Overall, they were better than most in the AFC on that side of the ball under Bowen.
Clearly, Bowen’s run defenses shined while in Tennessee. The Giants hope that he can bring along that trait to NY. That being said, they will look to improve upon his pass defense numbers. Those were a bit more inconsistent, based on EPA and yardage.
Bowen is a well-respected teacher and talent developer around the league. In his time in the NFL, he’s specialized in pass rush. The Giants will be happy to have him work with young pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and others.
Overall, it is a move by the Giants that proves they value experience. Bowen has called defense in the NFL before, a trait that many other candidates cannot boast at this point in coaching searches.
