Pep Guardiola insists Erling Haaland is happy at Manchester City after more reports linking him to Real Madrid.

Real were keen on signing Haaland from Dortmund in 2022 but City won the race with the club seen as an ideal choice not only because of their star-studded squad but also because they were crying out for a No.9. Haaland promptly scored 52 goals in a single campaign as the Blues won the Treble, knocking Real Madrid out of the Champions League in the semi-finals.

Haaland is leading the club and Premier League scoring charts again this season but has been sidelined for the last two months after a stress fracture in his foot. His return to fitness this week has been accompanied by reports from Madrid that he is not happy in Manchester, fuelling speculation about a future move.

Guardiola will let people decide on whether media in Madrid have more accurate information than he does on Haaland, but does not have any sense that the striker is unhappy. Away from that noise, the manager has said he is ready to start against Brentford on Monday to continue to help City.

“You have to ask the media from Madrid, maybe they have more info’ than we have,” he said. “We don’t have that feeling.

“He could not play for two months because he was injured but maybe the media from Spain, and especially Madrid, have more information than us. We cannot say he didn’t adapt quickly and he was not fine since he arrived.

“It’s the level he showed since he arrived on day one. We cannot control what people say. When he’s unhappy, he will take his decision.”
