The New York Giants can scratch another potential defensive coordinator candidate off their list.NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Tennessee Titans are closing in on a deal to hire Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson as their new defensive coordinator.
Accordingg to reports,Wilson, who had two interviews with the Giants (January 12 and January 27), appeared to be the favorite candidate from a pool with seven prospects.
The Giants also lost out on another potential defensive coordinator in Buffalo Bills linebackers coach Bobby Babich, who was promoted to the Bills defensive coordinator role.
Meanwhile, Shane Bowen, who had been the Titans defensive coordinator and had reportedly interviewed with the Giants on January 12, could now become available for other jobs.
According to Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky, the Titans had planned to hang on to Bowen while they searched for their defensive coordinator. With Wilson taking on that role, Bowen could now be released from his contract to pursue other opportunities.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen had told reporters at the Senior Bowl that the team hoped to wrap up its defensive coordinator search by the end of the week.
If Wilson was indeed the favorite, it remains to be seen if any of the other candidates, which, in addition to Bowen, include Giants defensive backs, coach Jerome Henderson, Chiefs linebackers coach Brendan Daly, Chargers defensive backs coach/interim defensive play caller Derrick Ansley and Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile, get second interviews and how this turn of events affects the timeline.
