MLB Pipeline has officially released their 2024 preseason top 100 prospects list, and the White Sox were represented with two prospects, both landing in the top 50.
It should come as a surprise to nobody that Colson Montgomery and Noah Schultz were the two to make it on MLB Pipeline’s list. Montgomery came in at No. 9, while Schultz landed at 50. Both players have appeared on just about every outlet’s version of a top prospect list thus far.
Montgomery, 21, has cemented himself as not only the top prospect in the White Sox organization, but also as one of the premier prospects in all of baseball. It has become a consensus that Montgomery is a top 20 prospect in all of baseball, and one of the top shortstops in a class that has plenty of competition.
After injuries delayed the start to his 2023 season, he came in without missing a beat, showing off his elite ability to get on base and wait for his pitch. He finished the season with a .287 batting average, .940 OPS, and a whopping 155 wRC+ across three minor league levels including 37 game stint in Double-A to end the season.
After drafting Schultz in the first round in 2022, his professional debut had to wait until June of 2023. He proved to be worth the wait, and even though his debut season was cut short due to a minor shoulder injury in August, it was nothing short of electric. He logged 27 innings in 10 starts, to which he held a 1.33 ERA with 38 strikeouts and only 6 walks. His ability to miss bats proved to be elite, and his control and ability to minimize walks was one of the most impressive parts of his game.
The Sox saw catcher Edgar Quero fall off the top 100 list after ending the 2023 season ranked 81. He most likely wasn’t far off from making the 2024 rankings, however, as he did appear on MLB Pipeline’s top 10 catchers list at ninth overall.
With prospects like Quero, Ramos, and Nastrini all trending upwards, it is very possible that the Sox will be well represented on this list and others come August.
