The New York Giants had plenty of quarterback woes this season. They dealt with multiple injuries and the future of the position seems to have a big question mark. It has resulted in fans thinking that QB Daniel Jones has underachieved with the team. Well, New York Giants WR Darius Slayton laughed at one comparison a fan made.
Comparing Daniel Jones and Patrick Mahomes?
This is Patrick Mahomes’ sixth season as the full-time starter and seventh in the NFL. As for Daniel Jones, he has been the New York Giants’ starting quarterback for five seasons. One fan could not help but comment on the drastic difference of where each are in their career.
The fan noted that Mahomes is playing in his sixth straight AFC Championship game and has already won two Super Bowl titles and two NFL MVP awards. As for Jones, the fan wants him to throw more than 15 touchdown passes and 3,000 passing yards in one season.
Darius Slayton’s Response
Slayton found this comparison to be ridiculous. It was so notable that he took the time to reply to this fan. Here is what he had to say:
“Mahomes has played wit HOF WR & TE and has had one HC in his 6 years and had the luxury of sitting and learning for a year and he took over a playoff team that won 10 games the year he sat. Comparing the 2 situations is laughable.” -Darius Slayton
It is an important note that Slayton comes from the same draft class as Jones. Both were drafted by the New York Giants in 2019 and have played together for five seasons. Slayton’s rookie year was his best, as he had eight touchdown receptions that season. However, he has still managed to have over 700 receiving yards in four of his first five seasons.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receivers
While it is true that Mahomes has likely had a HOF WR at one point (Tyreek Hill), it is fair to say that he is not working with the best weapons this year. Chiefs wide receivers have made headlines for the number of dropped passes they have had this season. Plus, there is one familiar face Giants fans know well on that team.
That face is Kadarius Toney. He was drafted by the New York Giants in 2021 and was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs during the next season. While being mostly ineffective for the Giants, Toney played a critical role in securing the Chiefs’ last Super Bowl title.
Admittedly, he has mostly been invisible in the 2023 season. He had just 169 receiving yards and has not played in the playoffs.
New York Giants Moving Forward
It is pretty clear Slayton believes that Giants QB Daniel Jones receives too much criticism from certain fans. However, it is fair to question what the future holds with Jones. The two main reasons for that are the Giants hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and the Giants can opt out of Jones’ contract after the 2024 season. We will have to see where this goes.
