Terrible Towel Tales: Baker Mayfield labeled as QB Steelers should target

Steelers news and commentary Thursday, January 18th

Welcome to the Terrible Towel Tales, where we’ll highlight some of the latest stories permeating Steelers media for your reading pleasure every Monday through Saturday. In today’s news…

Steelers Urged to Sign Former Browns QB | Noah Strackbein, All Steelers

That option is current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.

“It feels very likely that Mayfield will stick around with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but on the off chance that he does hit free agency, the Steelers should be the first team to pick up the phone,” McGuiness writes. “While Mayfield hasn’t lived up to the billing of being a former No. 1 overall pick, he is back at the level of his second and third seasons with the Cleveland Browns, earning a 74.6 PFF grade with 25 big-time throws and 24 turnover-worthy plays in the 2023 regular season.”

Mike Tomlin answered one question, but many more loom for the Steelers head coach | Ray Fittipaldo, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

When Mike Tomlin told his players Tuesday afternoon he was going to remain as Steelers head coach, it addressed only one of many questions he faces this offseason. Many more are going to be answered in the coming days and weeks.

Tomlin remains the head coach, but there is still the important matter of whether he signs a contract extension or merely finishes out the remainder of his contract as a lame duck.

Steelers Projected to Land ‘Top Athlete’ to Add Versatility on Defense | Dave Holcomb, Heavy

The Pittsburgh Steelers have drafted one cornerback in the first round the past 26 years, and that lone selection failed miserably. But The Athletic’s Dane Brugler predicted the Steelers to take another stab at selecting a cornerback in the first round this offseason.

In his latest 2024 NFL mock draft released on January 16, Brugler projected the Steelers to pick Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean.

“One of the top athletes in the draft, DeJean has experience as an outside corner, inside corner and a box/middle-field defender,” Brugler wrote. “I’ll be sending a petition for the NFL to add a dunk contest at the combine so we can see DeJean go to work. And we already know he performs well wearing black and gold.”
